Casambi vs KNX — An Honest Comparison

Both Casambi and KNX are proven lighting control technologies. Both are used in premium commercial projects across India. The question isn't which is better — it's which is right for your building, your budget and your timeline. At Exergy, we specify both. Here's how we think about the choice.

Modern commercial building interior with architectural lighting — illustrating the context for Casambi vs KNX lighting control comparison

The core difference

KNX is a wired protocol — every device connects back to a central controller via dedicated KNX cable. Casambi is wireless — devices communicate over Bluetooth mesh with no control wiring required. That single difference drives most of the trade-offs below.

When we specify Casambi

We reach for Casambi when the project is a retrofit where opening ceilings is not an option, when the timeline is tight and commissioning needs to happen fast, when the client wants simple app-based control without a dedicated control room, or when the budget needs to stretch further on lighting control to allow investment elsewhere.

When we specify KNX

KNX is our choice for large new-build projects where control wiring is being run anyway, for campuses and government buildings that need deep BMS integration from day one, for projects where the client needs a single wired backbone connecting lighting, HVAC, access control and AV, and for projects where a permanent on-site control infrastructure is non-negotiable.

When we use both

On larger projects, Casambi and KNX frequently coexist. A hotel might use KNX for the back-of-house BMS and Casambi for guest room lighting control — bridged together via a Lithernet gateway into Exergy Core™. The two protocols are complementary, not competing.

"At Exergy, we don't sell either protocol — we specify whichever is right for the project. If you're trying to decide between Casambi and KNX for a specific building, talk to us. We'll give you a straight answer."

FAQ

Common questions

Yes — via a Lithernet gateway, Casambi networks can pass commands to and from KNX systems. We do this regularly on mixed-protocol projects.

Often yes. For a single-floor or small multi-floor office without complex BMS requirements, Casambi delivers better value and faster installation.

Yes — Casambi operates entirely on-site via Bluetooth mesh. Internet connectivity (via the Cloud Gateway) is optional, for remote access only.

Both are well supported. KNX has a larger certified installer base in India. Casambi's India presence is growing rapidly through certified partners like Exergy.
